With over 35 years as an architectural designer and project manager for Hospitality, Resorts, Lodging, Hotels, Timeshares, Restaurant, Retail, Office, Multi-family Housing, Senior Living, Theme Park, Urban Planning, and Historical Preservation projects, Susan Berry understands construction and the bottom line.

While parenting a special needs teenager and caring for an elderly parent, she learned the harsh realities of all-ability customer service and architectural barriers to access.

Tom Berry, ADA Inspector, ADA Speaker, and Accessible Customer Service Trainer

Tom Berry is an ADA Inspector for Architectural Barriers. Toms background includes 30 plus years in private security and government customer service.

Tom Berry is the perfect trainer to work with business owners, facility managers and staff.

He quickly gets to the point providing specific information for businesses to improve accessibility and protect their facilities, employees and customers.

Serge, Service Dog, ADA store tester, and Party Animal

Serge, a Belgian Malinois, is a trained PTSD psychological support service dog and canine good citizen. He is not an emotional support dog. He is semi-retired.

Serge is a perfectly mannered gentleman who enjoys consistent training in crowds and public situations.

He is keenly aware of his surroundings, with a constant focus on his handler. and potential surrounding danger.

Serge works in a loose collar with lead, so that he can slip his collar and move away from potential danger, when his handler doesn't respond to his tugs.

Serge's Search and Rescue training identified him as an acute scent dog. He prefers blood sugar detection over cadavers, so his second service is diabetes blood sugar support.

Always aware of his handlers physical stance, strong man Serge's 3rd service is balance support and assisting in a fall.

Serge also knows how to find help when needed. He will only bark in public when calling for help.

Serge stars in our "Spot the Service Dog" presentation, where we explain the differences between Services Dogs and Emotional Support Animals. We also teach good customer service techniques for addressing dos in businesses.

Serge wants everyone to know the legal rules for Places of Public Accommodation:

1. Businesses may not legally require a service dog to wear a vest. A service dog vest is simply a uniform. Often visually impaired or hearing impaired people want the public to know their disability, so a service dog vest is a tool. With the Florida heat, there is no reason for Serge to wear a vest.

2. Businesses may not legally request service dog papers. The Department of Justice and the ADA do not acknowledge any "Service Dog Certificates or papers" for Places of Places Accommodation. Papers are often required for long-term housing and transportation under a different ADA title law. They are not required for lodging, restaurants, or businesses.

The ADA only allows businesses to ask two legal questions. That's ALL!

1. Is the service animal required because of a disability?
2. What work or task has the service animal been trained to perform?

A business may ask any animal, including a Service Dog, to leave their facility for bad behavior including approaching other guests; uncontrolled barking (a bark may be a message to the handler or request for help); aggressive behavior; getting on furniture; not housebroken; or poor hygiene.

What is the ADA?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities that are like those provided to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, and religion.

The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in employment, public accommodations, transportation, State and local government services and telecommunications.
